Just to be clear, Breezy Johnson's Olympic medal did not break in half. It detached from the ribbon that holds it around her neck.

She's not the only one that this has happened to, as the video below will show you.

Organizers of the 2026 Winter Olympics say they're investigating why medals are breaking — not even one week into the Games — after some athletes reported issues.

Wyoming's own Team USA alpine ski racing gold medallist Breezy Johnson held up her medal during a press conference, as the ribbon of her sporting the heavy trophy had broken shortly after she was presented with it.

“So there’s the medal. And there’s the ribbon,” she said. “And here’s the little piece that is supposed to go into the ribbon to hold the medal, and yeah, it came apart.”

“I was jumping up and down in excitement, then it just fell off.”

“I’m sure somebody will fix it…. It’s not like crazy broken, but it’s a little broken,” she added. She then sent a warning out to fellow athletes.

Alysa Liu, Team USA figure skating gold medallist, then reported that her medal had broken apart shortly after she won it.

“My medal doesn’t need the ribbon,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

Ellie Kam said Liu, her roommate, was jumping for joy when the medal fell and picked up “a couple of dents.”

“She was so excited that she was jumping up and down, and the medal is a little bit too heavy for the ribbon, I think, so it just popped off,” Kam told Reuters on Monday.

Wyoming's own Breezy Johnson won a gold on Sunday in the women’s downhill competition.

GO BREEZY!

That's much better than her participation in the 2018, where she finished seventh place.

Back in 2022, she crashed during a training run at the same Cortina venue and was not able to participate. At this point, she must be thinking, 'IT'S ABOUT TIME!' That's what you get for never giving up.

Breezy Johnson won the women's downhill gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics with a time of 1:36.10, reaching speeds of over 80 mph. She secured the USA's first gold of the Milano Cortina Games, navigating the challenging, high-speed Olympia delle Tofane course to beat Germany's Emma Aicher by 0.04 seconds.

Here are the Wyoming women you want to watch for in the 2026 Olympics

Jackson Hole native and alpine racer Breezy Johnson (don't you just love her name) represents the U.S. in the high-speed downhill in the Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy. Wyoming and the United States can proudly say that she’s the reigning world champion in the sport.

Then there is Jaelin Kauf, from Alta, Wyoming. Kauf won a silver medal in the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing and was the world champion last year.

Anna Gibson is a native of Jackson Hole. will compete in the first-ever Olympic Ski Mountaineering competition. This new event is a combination of skiing up and down snowbound alpine terrain.

This new competition is BRUTAL. It's not just skiing downhill and letting gravity do its thing.

Ski mountaineering (Skimo) debuts at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, featuring intense races combining uphill climbs with skins, boot-packing sections, and fast downhill skiing, with events including men's sprint, women's sprint, and a mixed relay, showcasing endurance and technical skill in alpine terrain.

Athletes use lightweight skis with climbing skins for ascents and transition rapidly between climbing, running in boots, and skiing down to the finish.

The video below will let you see how this works.

So grab some popcorn and watch our Wyoming girls. Let's cheer them on.
