The Casper Balloon Roundup is Central Wyoming's free hot-air ballooning event. During three days in early July, you can look up into the Casper skies and see a rainbow of hot air balloons soaring.

Taking place in the heart of Wyoming, this event enchants both young and old with its vibrant colors and community entertainment.

But how do we have an event like this in such a windy city like Casper, Wyoming?

It's because we have reached the time of year when the winds have calmed down, for the most part.

Mornings usually offer steady air, and that's when the ballooners like to go up.

The video below offers a view of a past balloon festival over Casper.

They wait for a morning when the wind is doing almost nothing and the temperatures are just right.

Once up in the air, they are at the mercy of the currents.

They often fly low enough that you'll be able to hear them firing their burners and maybe even hear them talking.

Go on and wave and take pictures. They are sure to be taking pictures and waving at you.

Ballooning in this part of the country is a bit easier, offering plenty of open spaces to land in.

You might have noticed that Casper and the surrounding landscape don't have a lot of trees. I'm sure you did. That's what makes the area perfect, this time of year.
