Green River Tunnel Evaluation Might Take A While
The cleanup of the Green River tunnel crash in Wyoming has begun but slowly.
This will take a while.
Below is a video from a professor of engineering who is looking at what happened and offers his opinion on what WYDOT will need to do to make sure the tunnel is safe.
This is the same gentleman we featured on the highway collapse through Teton Pass, last year.
It's not just a matter of pulling the vehicles and hosing out the mess.
There are structural issues to consider.
He gets to how WYDOT will have to proceed with their evaluation at 3:30 into the video.
In this video, I discuss the engineering and construction aspects of reopening the I-80 tunnel after the recovery operation has been completed.
Several vehicles were involved in the crash and resulting fire inside the westbound I-80 tunnels in Green River Wyoming that occurred February 14, 2025.
The fire burned for several hours which resulted in significant damage to the tunnel liner and tunnel infrastructure. (Casy Jones).
He thinks there might be "many, many weeks involved in just assessing the condition of the tunnel.
In the video, he then goes on to show how they do that, including what modern equipment is used to measure the thickness of the cement that lines to tunnel and how it fared after several explosions and being exposed to long hot fires.
He thinks that, as work progresses, WYDOT will allow cars through on a narrow lane, but big trucks will still have to go around.
