Jay Sawvel said during Mountain West Media Days in Las Vegas he sure hasn't witnessed a sixth-place team working out every day this offseason. Wyoming's new head coach also did what you might expect when he heard the news: shrug, downplay.

I agree.

I picked the Cowboys to land in third place when the smoke clears in late November. Boise State, like it has since joining the conference in 2011, was dubbed the favorite. UNLV is predicted to be the runner-up. I had those two programs in those slots, too.

Why no love for the Cowpokes?

A new head coach certainly aided in voters' decisions. I'd imagine having an unproven quarterback doesn't help, either. Evan Svoboda has one start under his belt. His second should come near his hometown when the Cowboys take on Arizona State in Tempe in the season opener. Wyoming also has a new offensive scheme. Will Jay Johnson's attack take off?

Questions remain, but what we do know is the stable of running backs is deep and talented, beginning with last season's leading rusher Harrison Waylee. Dawaiian McNeely is healthy again. Sam Scott, Jamari Ferrell and North Carolina transfer DJ Jones will also have a say.

The defense remains nearly intact.

Sure, leading tackler Easton Gibbs now wears a Seahawks' uniform, but veteran Shae Suiaunoa is expected to step in and continue the linebacker tradition in Laramie. Gavin Meyer bolted in the NCAA Transfer Portal and Caleb Robinson has a torn ACL. That hurts. Depth, though, on the interior line is not an issue. Can the Cowboys find another corner to play alongside Tyrecus Davis? If so, this unit could be one of the best in the league.

Would you be surprised?

Jared Newland and I break it all down in the latest Roaring Repeater Podcast, which you can find right HERE.

Fall camp in Laramie is set to begin July 31 inside War Memorial Stadium.

University of Wyoming’s Top 50 Football Players

During the summer of 2021, 7220Sports.com counted down the Top 50 football players in University of Wyoming history, presented by Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Worthy of Wyoming.

The rules are simple: What was the player's impact while in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolade earned outside of UW is irrelevant when it comes to this list.

This isn't a one-man job. This task called for a panel of experts. Joining 7220's Cody Tucker are Robert GagliardiJared NewlandRyan Thorburn, and Kevin McKinney.

We all compiled our own list of 50 and let computer averages do the work. Think BCS -- only we hope this catalog is fairer.
