Better Get Ready For The Extreme Temperatures Coming To Wyoming
You've heard that a significant cold front is heading to Wyoming but haven't prepared for it.
That's okay.
You still have time, but don't wait too long, or it will be too late.
Your pipes could freeze, the furnace may run constantly, trying to make up for the cold air coming through the gap in your windows, or your roof could get damaged because of a limb that fell out of a tree.
Winter has been relatively mild, but that's about to change with a cold front this weekend. That means it's time to get your house ready.
Here's a list of things to prepare your home to battle the cold.
- Don't let the temperature in your home get below 65 degrees -The temperature inside your walls is lower than the wall, so keeping your home 65 or higher will mean your pipes are less likely to freeze.
- Find your home's main water shut-off valve - If your water pipes freeze and burst, you'll need to know where the valve is and how to turn it off.
- Let your faucets drip - When the temperatures drop, it's wise to let your water faucets drip. The movement of water will help prevent the pipes from freezing.
- Check your heat sources - Check your fireplace, wood stove, electric heaters, and space heaters. Make sure they are in good working order and that no items that could catch fire are near them.
- Keep your fireplace flue closed. When it's not in use, it is an easy opening for cold air to enter your house.
- Watch your gutters. With the cold temperatures, there's a chance of snow, and if ice develops in your gutters, it could seep into your house. Clean out all the leaves and debris to keep the water flowing.
- Close the garage door. If your garage is attached to your house, it's likely not as insulated as the rest of the house, so keeping the door closed will keep the heat in.
- Watch the trees - The cold air, snow, and wind can affect the branches. If it's already weak, it could break and fall onto your house and cause extensive damage.
Doing these simple things can save you a headache and from spending lots of money.
