Winter in Wyoming offers many 'COOL' opportunities.

  • Downhill Skiing
  • Cross Country Skiing
  • Snowboarding
  • Snowshoeing
  • Snowmobile Riding
  • Ice Fishing
  • Ice Skating

You can take the last two activities on that list and do them at the same place.

Boysen State Park just outside of Shoshoni, WY and at the southern entrance to the Wind River Canyon, is your one stop shop for wintertime fun.

If you didn't know, Boysen Reservoir is one of the top destinations for ice fishing in the state. Usually one of the first large bodies of water to have ice, the cold nature of the area is a bonus to good thick ice, perfect for ice fishing an icy fun.

On the parks Facebook page, they've announced that ice skating is back and open to everyone that wants to get out on the ice.

Here's the kicker...

it's free to skate and they even have ice skates and ice hockey equipment for you to use, on the honor system, if you don't have any. All you'll have to do is pay the $7 per vehicle ( Wyoming resident) or $12 per vehicle (non Wyoming resident), which are standard State Park day usage fees. If you plan on using any Wyoming State Park areas this year, it may be a good idea to buy the annual day use park pass for just $48 (WY resident) $96 (non WY Resident).

The skating options include a traditional oval rink that is perfect for skating around and hockey, as well as a 'Frozen River' track to skate around.

How great is that?

It's another thing that shows Wyoming is a great place to live and the options of activities, year round, are a plenty.

The park monitors the ice health and thickness consistently, currently the ice at a 2 Feet thickness. The post says they will keep the ice open for public skating until it begins to melt and gets down to 10 inches.

So, for the next few weeks, it seems there will be plenty of fun being had at Boysen. Skating is open Wednesday - Sunday and they will take Monday and Tuesday to resurface the ice and get it ready for re-opening on Wednesday.

Remember that even though the ice is now thick, it's always smart to use caution and be prepared for anything.
