A bill that would allow people to carry concealed weapons in most gun-free zones in Wyoming has passed the Wyoming House and is now headed to the state Senate;

You can read House Bill 172 here. The bill is similar to one that lawmakers passed in 2024. That bill was vetoed by Governor Mark Gordon, who said it violated the state Constitution by "giving sole authority to the legislature to micromanage a constitutionally protected right."

An effort to call the legislature back into session to override that and several other vetoes was unsuccessful. .

But Thursday's vote on House Bill 172 was 50-10 in favor. That would be well over the two-thirds majority needed in to override any gubernatorial veto in the House. A two-thirds majority would also be needed in the Senate if the bill passes the legislature and is again vetoed.

Permit Would Be Needed For Guns In Schools

A concealed carry permit would be required to carry a concealed weapon in public schools or colleges. Under the law, people could still not carry guns into college and university areas where alcohol is being served.

People could carry guns into governmental meetings, and most other areas that are currently considered gun-free zones in Wyoming.

But private property owners could still restrict firearms on their property. Likewise, the bill would not allow people to carry firearms into a courtroom

School boards could also decide on rules for their employees carrying firearms in schools.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Jeremy Haroldson [R-Laramie, Platte counties], and a long list of co-sponsors.
