According to a fatality crash summary, 56-year-old Everett Van Meter was behind the wheel of an eastbound Chevrolet and had taken Exit 88 (Upper Powder River Road), when he went off the off-ramp to the right, entered the ditch, and struck a sign with a wooden post.

Van Meter reportedly steered left to get back onto the off-ramp, ran over a delineator post, slid across the off-ramp, and entered the gore to the north, where the Chevrolet tripped and began to roll uphill.

"The Chevrolet rolled 1/4 of a rotation, in which the driver was partially ejected from the front passenger window," the summary reads. "The Chevrolet struck a group of trees as it slid uphill on its passenger side. After impacting the trees with the roof, the Chevrolet then slid a short distance downhill, coming to rest, still on the passenger side."

Sadly, Van Meter, who was not wearing his seat belt, didn't survive his injuries.

The summary does not list any possible contributing factors.
