This is just nuts. Especially considering Colorado is the state that typically has the most lightning strikes every year. This time of year however, we usually don't see much lightning, but there was an incredible light show displayed that stretched across 500 miles and three states that is now the new record holder.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Monday announced that a single bolt in 2020 stretched for 477 miles across Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

A few months later, a lightning mega-flash in Uruguay and Argentina lasted 17 seconds, beating the old record for longest time. This map kind of puts it in perspective in terms of distance.

When it comes to lighting strikes, we here in Colorado are certainly no strangers to those as we are consistently in the top 3 or 4 states for the amount of lighting strikes we see in a year. But I think it's safe to say we - or anyone else - have never seen anything like this.

Even though it's far from lighting season for us here in Colorado, here's a reminder of just how crazy the lightning can be here - and a few reminders on safety for when spring comes rolling around next month.
