A chance of rain and some snow in Wyoming next week? Maybe. It would be a good thing because we really need it.

But let's be careful here. This past winter season has fooled weather forecasters more than a few times. The warmth and drought we experienced while the rest of the nation was deep in snow and freezing temperatures was not unprecedented, but it is rare.

At the high- and low-pressure systems that caused winter to miss us breaks up the door opens for some cold from the north and some wet from the Pacific. That has caused the weather models to show us a good chance of finally getting wet here in Wyoming.

Again, let's use caution in these predictions.

Do not expect a big storm but passing showers and maybe a few snowflakes over a period of several days.

We really need it.

If you are using a weather app to see ahead, just remember that those are just computer algorithms making predictions based on past trends. But the weather is complex, so there is no way of knowing exactly how this is going to play out.

The forecast will change day by day if you are looking 10 days out or more. Those long-range forecasts are unreliable. But we still use them to get an idea of what to expect, but not an exact prediction. That is impossible.

Let's hope for wet, green prairies and lots of flowers. It would not be the first time that we had a dry winter, then a wet spring.
