What started as a bright bolt of lightning that was seen by many in the area has now become over 100,000 acres burning in the Red Canyon area near Thermopolis, Wyoming.

The smoke in the area is horrible.

The Red Canyon Fire in Wyoming is roughly 11 miles East of Thermopolis, WY. Active in basically all directions.

Despite the hard work of firefighters, both on the ground and in the air, this fire remains 0% contained.

Evacs for South of Buffalo Creek Road, east of Jones Creek Road, and west of Reck Road from the fire area to the Fremont county line. This includes all of Kirby Creek, Lake Creek, Bridger Creek, and the Pack Saddle area.

Other fires are burning in Wyoming's Bighorn Basin.

One just west of Tensleep is the Spring Creek Fire.

It also remains 0% contained.

It has been a thorn in firefighters' sides for over a week.

Sleeper Ranch Fire: 20,657 acres, located in Park County, just outside of Meeteetse. Firefighters have been working hard at slowing down this fire and getting around it.

Good weather conditions have helped out as well.

The current Incident Commander and local resources will continue to manage this fire.

Because the Bighorn Basin has mountains on four sides, much of the smoke from these blazes is trapped in that area.

Skies are yellow, and breathing can be problematic.

Fire-fighting resources have been called in from surrounding areas, including planes and helicopters that are keeping the Casper and Worland airports busy.

Important Safety Reminder: Several property owners have taken independent firefighting actions. While understandable, these uncoordinated efforts divert resources away from fire suppression to ensure public safety. Please do not attempt independent firefighting. Coordinate with the Incident Management Team or stop all activities within the fire area.
Weather: Frequent lightning may cause new fire starts. Gusty outflows up to 40 mph are expected, potentially pushing fire growth. (Bureau Of Land Managment Wyoming).
