Rep. Cheney: Impeachment Proceedings ‘Just A Sham’
Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney says efforts by congressional Democrats to impeach President Trump are really just an effort to overturn the 2016 presidential election.
In an interview on Thursday with Glenn Woods on the ''Wake Up Wyoming" program, the Republican also predicted that the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives will vote for articles of impeachment, but that the effort to remove the president from office will fail in the Republican-dominated Senate.
It would take a 2/3 majority vote of the Senate to remove President Trump from office. Since Republicans hold 53 of the 100 Senate seats, any vote to remove the president from office would require significant Republican support in order to be successful.
Cheney said Democrats "have been working in secret in the basement of the capitol to impeach the president," She said congressional Democrats have failed to put in place the kind of guidelines to safeguard the rights of the president that were enacted during past impeachment proceedings involving presidents Nixon and Clinton, adding that a Thursday vote on ground rules for the hearing only came about because Democrats came under fire for the way the hearings were being handled.
The House voted 232-196 on Thursday to start holding public hearings on impeachment. Two Democrats joined House Republicans in voting against that measure.
