Running Of The Wieners To Highlight Cheyenne ‘Dogtoberfest’ Event
Downtown Cheyenne is going to the dogs, literally. A wiener dog race and Halloween costume contest will headline the city's first "Dogtoberfest" on Saturday, October 19th.
The party will be hosted by Freedom's Edge Brewery, who will close the 1500 block of Pioneer Avenue from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. to raise money for the Cheyenne Animal Shelter. Along with the wiener dog race, event organizers will also award prizes for the best human and animal look-a-likes, the best Oktoberfest-themed attire, and Halloween costumes for dogs and people.
Registration for the wiener dog race is currently underway and open to both pure breed and mixed breed dachshunds. Registration is $25 per dog for the race and space is limited. Dogtoberfest will also feature several Cheyenne area food trucks and Freedom's Edge is brewing a special "Hair of the Dog" beer to toast the occasion.
The wiener dog race is the first of its kind in Cheyenne, although similar events have been held across the country. Last May, the Pine Bluffs Distilling Company held the first Pine Bluffs Corgy Derby, which attracted several hundred dog lovers from around the region.
