SNAKE BITES – What NOT To Do
Hollywood movies give the worst advice.
Honestly, when I was growing up, I thought that quicksand was going to be a major problem because so many movies showed someone sinking in it.
Quicksand has never been a problem for me in real life.
Recently, we posted an article on how warming weather is bringing out the rattlesnakes. So tread carefully.
The advice in that article showed that EVERY solution to a rattlesnake bite that you have seen in a Hollywood movie is WRONG!
Below is TRUE advice on what to do and not to do if you are bitten by a rattlesnake.
If a rattlesnake bites you do this:
- Stay Calm.
- Call 911.
- Wash the bite area with soap and water if possible.
- Remove jewelry or watches in case of swelling.
- Immobilize the bite area.
- Keep the bite area below your heart if possible.
- Get medical treatment A.S.A.P.
Don't do this
- Make incisions around the bite area.
- Use a tourniquet to reduce blood flow.
- Ice the wound.
- Suck the poison out with your mouth.
HOLD ON!
In the movies, they always make an incision around the bite area, tie a tourniquet and then start sucking the venum out of the wound.
So everything we saw those actors do was WRONG!
Don't they hire consultants for movies and TV shows?
I guess they never hired rattlesnake bite consultants.
What I get out of this is, when in trouble, do the opposite of what you have seen the the many Hollywood productions you have watched.
These are actors, not experts.
