Soda, Pop, Or Coke? Wyoming Enters Debate
When you ask for a "soda" of some kind, how do you ask for it?
You want a...
Pop.
Soda.
Sodapop.
Cola.
Coke.
Solf Drink.
It all depends on what part of the country you are from.
So I asked the people of Wyoming what they call it.
The first few answers were a bit on the serious side. Then it gets funny.
If you are in the South, it's a coke.
It does not matter if you're drinking a Sprite.
The video below has the history of these names and why we call them what we do.
That's just a different kind of Coke.
The name 'pop' actually came from the sound made when people open old-style soda bottles with metal cap tops.
Notice Lena, who grew up in Maine, called it a Soda.
There are those who use both interchangeably, or call it a Sodapop.
Though that is used far less often than just saying one or the other.
Here is where the answers start getting funny.
Whisky mix?
Well, okay.
I'm with Tanya, I'll call it by the name of the product I want, or I'll refer to all of them, collectively, as "soda."
My sister is the last one in the string above.
She does not like calling it Pop because that's what you call your father.
There are many different types of "cola."
Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola, plus many other companies making their version of the "cola" flavor.
In the string above Nicholas noticed what I did.
We both grew up in Florida, but I was on the west coast.
We heard it referred to as soda until we moved to Wyoming.
In the comment above Virginia calls it Soda Pop.
She's a rare find.
Michael also refers to it as a "mixer" for drinks.
Dathan Rye called it Cold Pop.
Danny Ellis calls it Soda Water.
However, soda water refers to something without flavor.
It's basically water with carbonation.
Peter McDaniels is one of the few who use both Soda and Pop together.
We had many more comments but this last one really stood out.
