The city announced its plans to hoist away the statues Friday after a long legal fight held up the removal plans for years.

They also noted the marker was dedicated in 1933 by a chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which had strong ties to the Ku Klux Klan.

Three statues honoring white supremacists — including former U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun — would be immediately removed.
