The defense attorney for the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of killing George Floyd has requested a new trial, saying the court abused its discretion on several points.

A more complete remaking of the department is likely to unfold in coming months.

Attorney Ben Crump says Officer Derek Chauvin should be charged with first-degree murder.

The officer, Derek Chauvin, was fired shortly afterward and has since been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, both felonies.

Outside the White House, police fired tear gas and stun grenades into a crowd who set fire in a street.

A day earlier, demonstrators had taken to the streets in Los Angeles and Memphis.

The official White House account later reposted the comment, which was also flagged by the social media giant.

The mayor says he saw nothing to justify that kind of force.

The case drew immediate comparisons to that of Eric Garner.
