Train Engineer Stopped for DUI? — Near Cheyenne
What is the biggest vehicle that has ever been stopped for DUI?
According to Sheriff Kozak:
Vehicle length was 12,755 feet.
It weighed 15,993 tons.
It was pulling 127 loaded cars plus 55 unloaded cars.
It was carrying hazardous material, which included diesel fuel, liquid petroleum gas, ammonia nitrate residue, and asphalt.
If you are now thinking that it might have been a train, you would be correct. You can watch the Sheriff's Facebook video describing what happened at this link.
According to the account given by Mr. Kozak, the train was coming from Nebraska. It was an 8-hour trip. The conductor noticed that the engineer, the guy in charge of operating the train, was in no condition to be at the controls.
The engineer was described as extremely impaired and violent, with erratic behavior.
The train was stopped before it entered the yard in Cheyenne.
The conductor called the supervisor, who called law enforcement.
At this point, the engineer became violent toward the conductor. The conductor chose to lock himself in one of the engine compartments rather than get into a fight.
That is when the police arrived.
It was determined that the engineer was under the influence of - something - probably drugs - allegedly.
Interestingly enough, the engineer could not be arrested for DUI under state law, because the vehicle was on train tracks, not a road.
Instead, they arrested him for reckless endangerment in stalking the conductor.
In his video, Sheriff Kozak says that he believes the conductor saved lives on that day. Lord only knows what would have happened if that train had been allowed to ride into Cheyenne with an engineer under the influence at the controls.
