They could have taken the safe way around.

But they could not turn down a flying adventure across some of Wyoming's tallest mountains.

I flew Hal Stockman from Idaho to South Dakota so he could pick up his new Badlands Vaqario aircraft.

We stopped in Pinedale, Wyoming, to meet up with Nathan in his RANS S-7, then continued the flight over the Wind River Range.

I didn't expect it to be that intense of terrain.

You can watch the entire video, or just scroll to 12:30 and watch the nail-biting flight over Wyoming's Wind River Range.

It's an early morning flight on a cold winter day.

That means calm and smooth air.

These small planes are meant for backcountry flying.

While tough and rugged, nobody wants to be up in them through choppy and turbulent air. They are ultra-light.

Look at how close he gets to this cliff wall.

So what would they do if the engine failed?

Find a flat area to land is the only answer, and there are some up there.

They even saw some cross-country skiers while up that high.

After landing on a flat area, they would hope to be found and rescued.

Let's hope they have some winter survival gear.

Traveling in pairs like this is smart.

If one has a problem, the other can let the authorities know where their partner went down.

A flight over this mountain range does not take long. But don't be fooled. Having to land down there means days of walking out, even in the summer.

After crossing the Wind River Range, it was easy flying over the much flatter lands to Shashonie and beyond to South Dakota.

Local Pilots Give Wyoming Kids A Free Flight

Does your kid want to be a pilot?

There is no way of knowing unless they get a chance to get in an airplane and get up there.

Thanks to a Wyoming chapter of EAA, (Experimental Aircraft Association), kids in Wheatland Wyoming got that chance this past weekend.

Local pilots offered free rides to all kids, breakfast included.

The hope is that maybe some of these kids will get that urge to want to fly and pursue a career as a pilot.

America needs more pilots.
