Eddie Van Halen will always be known as the legendary guitarist and co-founder of Van Halen

At only 65 year old he has died after a long battle with cancer.

But before he died he was able to see himself listed in the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame as #8 of the top 100 rock guitar players of all time.

Eddie died at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica Tuesday. He was not alone. His wife, Janie was with him along with his son, Wolfgang. Also in the room were his ex-wife Valerie Bertinelli, and Alex, who was Eddie's brother and his drummer.

Eddie had been battling cancer for years and had been in and out of the hospital many times.

While he had been a heavy smoker for most of his adult life, doctors believe that Eddie developed throat cancer from a metal guitar pick he used to frequently hold in his mouth.

Here is a salute to a great life and a successful man who died surrounded by those he loved and who loved him.
