Weird Gas Prices In Buford, Wyoming

I went camping this weekend at Vedauwoo Wyoming. Vedauwoo is an amazing series of rock formations on I-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie.

Eastbound, just before Vedauwoo, I see the little town of Buford. It used to boast a population of... 1. Now nobody lives there. But the gas pumps are still running at the station and the convenience store is being remodeled on the inside.

The prices for unleaded jumped out at me - $2.97.  WOW - We used to consider a price like that to be outrageously high. 

I did not need gas but like many other people passing by, I was not going to leave the area without topping off. I was lucky to see an open pump when I pulled in.

But as I topped off the tank I wondered, why are their prices so low compared to everywhere else around here?

Gas prices fluctuate for many different reasons. We can't blame high prices on just one thing like "It's those greedy oil companies." World wide markets affect prices as much as international, national, and local laws.

The average gas price in Cheyenne was around $3.40. For Laramie. $3.17 up in Sheridan. It's around $3.24. Those average prices hold true across much of Wyoming, with just a little fluctuation. Teton County Wyoming is high, as usual, at almost $4.00 a gallon, average.

But over in Nebraska prices are much lower. $3.00 is average with a few small towns along I-25 showing $2.77 as average.

Most of Colorado is in the $3.50 range for a gallon of regular.

Okay, so that brings up back to this one lone station located in a strange location with self serve pumps and no attendant. Why is their price so low compared to other stations to their east and west? Honestly, I can't answer that for you. I'm asking.

The best I can figure is that the station is located in a place that does not have much in the way of local taxes and regulations. But that's just a guess.
