Why Did So Many Dinosaurs Die In This Wyoming Location?
Somewhere, at a hidden location in the Bighorn Bason of Wyoming, is a mass dinosaur grave.
So far 15 giant skeletons have been found. Many more will be found. Perhaps hundreds more.
Why did so many dinosaurs die here?
What happened to them?
A documentary called Jurassic Ghost Town: A Mass Murder Mystery follows a team of palaeontologists as they dig up one of the greatest dino graves ever found and look for clues.
This dieoff occurred around 150 million years ago.
There were a few predators at this location, namely the Allosaurus.
Allosaurus looks a lot like a T-Rex, but was smaller, and lived long before the T-Rex ever came into being.
Were these hunters the culprit?
Wyoming looked very different back then. The area was more like the Florida Everglades than what we see today.
Times of intense flooding and years of drought occurred in natural cycles as it still does today.
It looks like the dieoff occurred around a river that led to a large, swampy, watering hole.
Was it a flood that killed them off?
It looks more like it was the opposite, a drought, that led to a dieoff.
The rotting bodies of massive dinos needing water would have called in the Allosaurus who feasted on the rotting flesh.
But then why did some of those Allosauruses die? Their bones have been found too.
This site is massive and paleontologists will be digging here for many decades. There is just so much to find and they have barely scratched the surface.
