These Beautiful Wyoming Mountains Are Hard To Get To
Wyoming's Wind River Range, located in western Wyoming, is one of the most rugged and scenic mountain ranges in the Rocky Mountains. It is known for its dramatic granite peaks, deep valleys, and over 1,300 alpine lakes. The range includes Gannett Peak, the highest mountain in Wyoming, rising to 13,804 feet (4,207 m).
Yet of all the road trips people can make to see Wyoming, it is one that is often missed. Probably because it is so rugged that not just anybody can do it.
The Wind River Range is a popular destination for hiking, backpacking, climbing, fishing, and wildlife viewing. It is home to diverse ecosystems and wildlife such as grizzly bears, moose, elk, and mountain goats. Much of the area is protected within the Bridger–Teton and Shoshone National Forests, as well as the Wind River Indian Reservation.
Due to its remote wilderness, challenging terrain, and stunning landscapes, the Wind River Range is considered one of the premier outdoor and adventure destinations in the United States.
Driving, biking, hiking, camping. Do it the easy way or the hard way.
Just make sure to see it.
Wyoming's Wind River Range ("The Winds") is a rugged, high-altitude section of the Rockies known for its stunning alpine scenery, extensive glaciers (including Gannett Glacier, the largest in the Rockies).
You'll see numerous 13,000+ ft peaks (like Gannett Peak, Wyoming's highest), over 1,300 lakes, and abundant wildlife, offering premier backpacking, climbing, and fishing in wilderness areas within Bridger-Teton and Shoshone National Forests, but requires preparedness for challenging terrain, mosquitoes, and potential bear encounters.
As much as we in Fremont County would love to entirely claim the Wind River Mountains, we share the west side with Sublette County.
The recommended adventures might start in Sublette County, but Fremont County is still a perfect jumping-off point for your adventure – we are Wind River Country after all. For more information, check in with local outdoor shops. They will have all the information on trail conditions and additional trip suggestions.
There are guides for hire to help you explore the range. If this is your first time, it is a good idea to hire one.
