A winter storm on Saturday toppled a radio antenna tower in Chadron State Park in Nebraska, silencing the NOAA weather broadcasts for an area that includes the northern Nebraska Panhandle.

According to the Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service. The storm, which rocked much of Nebraska as well as large areas of Wyoming and Colorado, featured 50-60 mph winds, freezing fog, freezing drizzle and heavy snow. A blizzard warning was in effect for the area at the time of the collapse of the KCOW radio tower, which also held the NOAA radio transmitter.

The transmitter coverage area includes the northern Nebraska Panhandle counties of Sioux, Box Butte, Dawes and Sheridan Counties.

It's not clear at this point when the transmitter might be restored, so in the meantime, the National Weather Service is asking residents of the area to tune into the following NOAA weather broadcasts:

Area Affected /Switch to NOAA Weather/Radio Name/Frequency

Northern Sioux, Northern Dawes WXK64 – Hot Springs, SD 162.425

Southern Sioux, Southern Dawes, Box Butte, South Sheridan WXL67 – Scottsbluff, NE 162.475
