Wyoming is famous for many things, including the Plains Indians.

Unlike many other Indian tribes across North America, the Plains Indians were nomadic. They followed their main sources of food, clothing, and tools, which meant following the herds as they migrated.

Along the way, they left evidence of their travels.

In Wyoming, arrowheads are often found along creeks and river banks, especially where water levels are low, as well as in dry creek beds and eroded creek sides.

Public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) are potential locations for surface finds, though collecting has specific regulations.

Areas with historical Native American activity, such as near Greybull or around Devils Tower National Monument, might also yield artifacts.

When you find an arrowhead, you have found information on which tribe was there and even when the arrowhead was made. The way arrowheads were constructed changed over time, which helps in dating them.

Geologist Keith Jackson has an interesting article on Wyoming arrowheads with pictures of their types, tribes, and times. Read more at this link.

Wyoming is full of history, and its landscapes hold many artifacts from the past. Arrowheads give us a connection to earlier cultures, showing how people once lived and worked. Focusing your search in the right areas can improve your chances of success.  Keith Jackson.

Arrowhead types found in Wyoming include Paleoindian-era Clovis points and Archaic-period points like the Archaic Knife, Archaic Side Notch, and Archaic Stemmed points.

The Cody Complex, which features Eden and Scottsbluff points, is also common.

Points are classified by shape, cultural period, and material, with materials such as tiger chert and obsidian being prevalent
