Wyoming Is Half In Drought & Half Green
When it comes to how much rain the Cowboy State has received in 2025, Wyoming is split in half.
The eastern side of the state has been mostly green all year long.
The western side, and mostly the south-western side, is a completely different story.
The map below is provided by the state of Wyoming and the federal government. You can check in from time to time to see how we are doing at this link.
Obviously, white is good, yellow is yucky orange and deep orange is bad. Red sucks and needs rain really badly.

Intensity.
It's not unusual to see a split in our state like the one you see here.
Some years, the split between north and south is the opposite, with the southern part of the state being in the white.
The same can be said for the entire nation, as you can see by the U.S. Drought Monitor map below.
Most of the nation is just fine.
But not those Western states.
If you remember, just a couple of years ago, one hard winter cured all of the western drought problems, filling reservoirs and leaving a tall snow pack on the mountains.
According to meteorologists, these trends have more to do with cycles of the sun and Pacific isolation.
Weather trends here in North America have a lot to do with what happens in the Pacific. As we swap between what is known as La Niña and El Niño, we will swap from hot and dry to wet and cold.
About every 10 years, we go through a 2-year La Niña will coincides with the Sun cycles. According to Don Day of Day Weather in Cheyenne, Wyoming, we are now on the backside of a La Niña. That means we will be coming out of it soon, but not too soon.
The U.S. Drought Monitor is produced through a partnership between the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
