AI Can’t Pronounce Wyoming’s Popo Agie River
The other day, I was looking for some information on Wyoming's Popo Agie River. To speed up my search, I asked Google AI about it. But Google AI could not understand what I was saying.
"Popo Agie" is not pronounced anywhere near the way you see it spelled here. The Popo Agie River in Wyoming is pronounced puh-POE-zha (or puh-PO-shuh), sounding like one word not two words. I have a video below where you can hear someone say it correctly.
When I asked AI about the river, I got an answer like this:
Because "the proposal River" can refer to a few different contexts, the most likely topics you might be looking for are detailed below...
But when I pronounced it phonetically, "PO PO AG IE" - the answer I got was the following:
The Middle Popo Agie River in Fremont County, Wyoming, is a 54-mile-long stream famous for vanishing into a limestone cavern....
Watch the video below, and you'll hear a young lady pronounce the name properly.
I can forgive any human who sees the name for the first time and says the name wrong. Now we have AI, which is in its infancy, also getting it wrong. So I can forgive AI as well.
How about we change the spelling to something that makes more sense? Maybe "Poepoesha." I think people would see that spelling and sound it out.
While we are at it, let's change the spelling of the Mojave Desert. The way it looks is MO-JAVE, which is Spanish. But in English, we pronounce it "Moh-HAH-vee."
