Cameron Peak Fire Now Colorado’s Largest Fire Ever
As the Cameron Peak Fire spread ash and hazed the sky across Northern Colorado and the Front Range on Wednesday (Oct. 14), the fire grew to become the largest ever recorded in Colorado.
A Wednesday night official update put the fire at 158,300 acres. Containment remained at 56%.
High winds allowed the fire to expand by more than 20,000 acres on Wednesday. More evacuations and road closures were put in place because of the fire's expansion.
Cameron Peak Fire, which has been burning since Aug. 13, surpasses the Pine Gulch Fire from earlier this year near Grand Junction as the largest recorded fire in Colorado history.
Before 2020, the 2002 Hayman Fire had the record at 137,760 acres.
