Cheyenne Sees Coldest Second Half of May in 71 Years
Despite hitting 86 degrees on May 27, the second half of May 2022 in Cheyenne was the coldest since 1951, according to the National Weather Service.
"Notably, the cold snap on May 21st was one of the coldest events this late in the season in the last 70 years," the NWS said.
Rawlins, Torrington, Douglas, Sidney, and Alliance all set daily record lows that day, and Cheyenne, which bottomed out at a chilly 24 degrees, the coldest temperature for the month, was only one degree shy of tying its 140-year-old record.
Scottsbluff also recorded its coldest temperature of the month that day, 27 degrees, the latest occurrence of a temperature below 30 degrees since 1947.
May 22 was also one for the record books.
The mercury plummeted to 26 in Cheyenne, breaking the previous record low for the day of 29 degrees set all the way back in 1930.
Rawlins, Laramie, Chadron, Sidney, and Alliance also set record daily lows, and Scottsbluff came within one degree of tying its 107-year-old record.
"While the stats came out to near average, May 2022 was a month characterized by extremes across our area," the NWS said. "We had both record warmth and record cold last month, but overall came out to slightly cooler than average."
