Devils Tower 7th Annual Bat Festival August 30th
It's a place of lore, space aliens, AND BATS!
BATS?
Yeah, Devils Tower has it all.
The Devils Tower 7th Annual Bat Festival is just around the corner.
Come join Park Rangers between the hours of 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on August 30 at the Picnic Area at Devils Tower National Monument.
They will have a booth that will be running from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Activities at the booth include: bat masks, coloring sheets, bat games, a reading of the Stellaluna book, face painting, books, and more.
From 6:00 - 6:30 will be the Bat Parade.
Costumes are recommended for this event, bat ones if you have them (remember you can make a Bat mask at the booth). Come dressed as BATMAN for all they care. It might be fun to think of the Caped Crusader as having his Bat Cave at the tower.
From 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. guest speaker Amy Hammesfahr will talk about bats. The night will conclude with a Bat Walk through the Prairie Dog Town from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Eleven different species of bats have been identified at Devils Tower National Monument. Although some roost on the tower itself, biologists now know that bats within the park frequent the boulder field and forests at the base, as much or more than the actual formation.
The following bats have been identified within the park:
Little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus)
Hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus)
Silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans)
Big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus)
Townsend's big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii)
Western long-eared bat (Myotis evotis)
Fringed myotis (Myotis thysanodes)
Eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis)
Western small-footed bat (Myotis ciliolabrum)
Northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis)
Long-legged myotis (Myotis volans)
Below are some fun facts about the most common bats found at the monument.
