Imagine being a dedicated employee for years, only to be given the business as a gift. That is what happened at the Flat Creek Ranch, at the edge of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Joe Albright and Marcia Kunstel, the owners for 27 years, are giving the ranch to the family who have managed it for 21 years: Trey and Shelby Scharp.

Albright announced the transition at a Rotary Club of Jackson Hole meeting.

The former owners are Albright and Kunstel, retired journalists; Albright is a former member of the St. John’s Health Board of Trustees. They are giving the entire property and business to the Scharps, who are longtime ranch managers.

As you might be thinking, guest ranches can sell for millions. So why the gift? Just the property alone can sell for MEGA BUCKS in Jackson.

Lost Creek Ranch changed hands after being listed for $39.5 million. Up the Gros Ventre River drainage, the Goosewing Ranch and Gunsight Ranch were sold and recombined after being listed independently for a total of $26 million. In total, those up-drainage ranches span 154 acres. (Jackson Hole News & Guide).

The reason given is that the couple that owns the ranch wants to maintain its legacy. They don't want it to be torn up for some new development. The current caretakers share that idea.

In 1986, Joe Albright’s mother donated Flat Creek Ranch to the Jackson Hole Land Trust. The younger Albright bought it back in 1998, and he and Kunstel remodeled the property, got it listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, and reopened it to guests. The Scharps took over as managers in 2014. (Jackson Hole News & Guide).
