Over time the place we now call Wyoming has gone through many changes.

It was once at the bottom of an ocean.

It was once a massive lake. It was a swamp.

It's been buried under over a mile of ice many times.

It's been a sandy desert.

Today Wyoming is a high planes desert, and much of that history can be found if you know what you are looking for and where to dig.

The fossils found in the top layers of Fossil Butte and the surrounding ridges are the remains of plants and animals that lived in and around a large freshwater lake 52-million years ago in the early Eocene Epoch. (National Park Service).

Would you like to dig and find a little history to take home for yourself?

You can with Fossil Lake Safari in Kemmerer, Wyoming.

You get to keep the fossils that you find at the Fossil Lake Safari quarry including dozens of species of fish, stingrays, gars, plants, and insects.

Fossils of birds, bats, turtles, crocodiles, lizards, and mammals can be found, but are a very rare component of the Green River Formation fauna.

The natural process of change continues to this day.

Who knows what Wyoming will look like in another 10,000 years?

The Tate Geological Museum Casper Wyoming

The Tate Geological Museum was founded in 1980 through a gift from Marion and Inez Tate. It was originally designated as the Tate Earth Science Center and Mineralogical Museum. Because ‘geological’ encompasses earth science, mineralogy, and paleontology, the name was changed to the Tate Geological Museum in 2001.

Located on the Casper College campus, the museum is a great resource for the community. Many local schools and groups come to the museum to add to their student's learning experience.

Tate houses a collection of over 6000 fossil and mineral specimens.
