Cheyenne Police Issue High-Pressure Phone Scam Warning
The Cheyenne Police Department is warning residents about a high-pressure phone scam that has been reported in the area.
According to CPD spokeswoman Alex Farkas, the scam inviolves someone claiming to represent Fedex as well as a phony business owner:
'During the scam, an employee received a phone call from someone claiming to represent FedEx, followed by text messages impersonating the business owner. The caller claimed there was an issue with a package payment that needed to be resolved to avoid a $20,000 fine.
The caller instructed the employee to leave work, withdraw cash, and wire transfer it to a town in Mexico, with the promise that it would be refunded by the end of the business day. Throughout the call, the scammer insisted she remain on the phone and discouraged her from verifying the information. She later realized she had been scammed.'
The scam is not a new one and has been around in various forms at least since 2017. But apparently it's effective, or the scammers would not keep using it.
