As of August 4th, 2025, the Powerball Lottery is up to $1.70 billion.

So let's say you are the only winner. Congratulations.

Do you opt to get paid for the next 30 years, or do you take the one lump sum option?

Either way, you'll never actually get $1.70 billion. That part is a lie. You'll never see the full amount.

According to Market Watch, you will get more money if you take payments over 30 years. But you still have to pay an enormous amount in taxes. Taxes change over time. You'll get less due to inflation. Your government is deeply in debt, so you have to worry about the payout. Then you have to ask yourself if you are actually going to live for another 30 years.

So let's say you take the one-time payment option. You'll still get a lot of money, but you can forget that $1.7 billion that you were promised.

Right away 23% is taken out. Then the IRS wants its cut, and that will depend on how much you are worth before winning and how big the jackpot is.

According to SmartAssets, a financial and tax advice website, the lump-sum cash option is calculated as the present-day value of the annuity payments, which is often 40% to 50% less than the advertised jackpot.

But the government is not done taxing that money over time, so you'll see even less than that.

If you are to win a jackpot like this, make sure you live in a state like Wyoming, where they don't have a state income tax. If you add in a state income tax, you'll probably have about 65% of your winnings taken over time.

The lottery website says that the one-time payout for $1.7 billion is estimated at $700 million.

That is not a person alive who would not be happy with $700 million.

But remember, they are still going to tax the $700 million.

You'll never see the $1.7 billion you were sold on.
