Lander Mayor Monte Richardson unexpectedly died on Feb. 12.

The town was in shock as the news appeared on the city's website Wednesday morning.

“This is a heartbreaking day for Mayor Richardson’s family, the City of Lander, the City Council, and our community,” said City Council President Julia Stuble in the release announcing Richardson’s death. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The city will hold a special meeting on February 18th to appoint a mayor pro term and to discuss the process for appointing a new mayor.

With profound sadness, the family, council, and staff of the City of Lander announce the unexpected passing of Mayor Monte Richardson on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

Mayor Richardson dedicated his life to public service, serving as mayor since 2019, following serving as a council member for many years.

 

His contributions to Lander are immeasurable, and his legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched.

Known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion for the community, he will be deeply missed.

 

“This is a heartbreaking day for Mayor Richardson’s family, the City of Lander, City council, and our community,” said Council President Julia Stuble. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

 

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Richardson family, his friends, and everyone mourning his loss.

 

Richardson was born in Rock Springs.

He moved to Lander in 1976.

He served on the city council for 8 years.

He was first elected mayor back in 2018. This was his second term.

Richardson worked for Lander School District #1 for almost forty years and coached local sports teams.

He is survived by three children and five grandchildren.
