QUESTIONS ANSWERED: Portable Nuclear Reactors Wyoming
Bar Nunn, Wyoming, is where a company plans to build portable nuclear microreactors in Natrona County.
It's a different kind of power plant that can be loaded up on a semi-truck and delivered anywhere in the nation.
A typical "micro reactor" could deliver power for about 3 to 5 years before its fuel rods have to be replenished.
The idea is new. - Is it safe?
On Thursday, 03/27/25, Mat Wilson, the Director Of Operations of Radiant Nuclear, joined Wyoming radio talk host Glenn Woods to explain how the reactors work and, more importantly, where and how those spent fuel rods will be stored.
You can listen to that interview below.
You can read all about the progress of Radiant's nuclear program at their blog site by clicking this link.
Public comments heard at a recent town hall meeting in Bar Nunn, and listener reaction from callers Glenn Woods has taken on his radio show are less about the reactor and more about waste storage.
You can watch a video about the Radiant reactor below.
Currently, the United States does not have any place for nuclear waste.
So Radiant plants to temporarily store spent fuel rods on site in Bar Nunn.
So what exactly would that look like, and how temporary is - "temporary?"
What about the construction and fueling of these reactors before they are sent off to customers?
Is there any problem with storing unused fuel rods on site until they are used?
What about the ever dreaded "meltdown" scenario?
These are the questions that the general public has, and you can hear the answers given in the audio interview above.
