The truck driver in the video below was traveling on Interstate 80, near the Little America on the west side of Wyoming. He had to pull over, and when he did, he noticed something disgusting.

To be fair, this is a problem that we see all over the United States, but it is still disgusting.

There was trash - EVERYWHERE!

Disrespectful slobs that just throw stuff out of their windows rather than keeping a little trash bag in their car and doing the right thing by finding a garbage can at the next stop.

I'll say again - these people are disgusting, lazy, disrespectful slobs.

According to the Wyoming Department of Transportation the state spends more than $2 million to $2.5 million annually to clean up litter along its 6,800 miles of highway. This cost covers the manpower and equipment needed to manage the large volume of waste discarded on roadsides.

There are nearly 50 billion pieces of litter on U.S. roadways and waterways, according to a 2020 national study, averaging over 2,000 pieces per mile. This equates to approximately 152 items for every person in the country. While significant, this is a 54% decrease in roadside litter from 2009. This according to a study from Keep America Beautiful.

The study estimated 23.7 billion pieces of litter along roadways and 25.9 billion along waterways.

Tobacco products (mostly cigarette butts) are the largest category, accounting for 38% of litter.

The majority (90%) of litter is less than 4 inches in size.

Impact and Cost: Roadside trash is a major hazard and cost. For example, North Carolina reported over 8.3 million pounds of debris collected in one year, and Maryland spends roughly $16 million annually on cleanup.

Motorists and pedestrians are responsible for nearly 70% of litter on highways.

Despite the large numbers, studies indicate the overall trend of littering has decreased, though it remains a serious environmental and fiscal issue.

Medicine Bow Wyoming Road Art

There’s a strange mind at work in Medicine Bow. Someone equal parts disturbed and delighted, scheming and laughing at the same time. And somehow, they want to pull you into the fun.
