Why Is Wyoming The 2nd Least Visited State?
If you live in Wyoming you know that tourism is one of our main industries.
Yet at the same time, Wyoming is one of the least visited states in the nation.
In 2023, around 8.7 million people visited Wyoming, which is a 13.8% increase from 2022. Tourism is the second largest industry in Wyoming, and it impacts all 23 counties in the state.
Despite that impressive-sounding number it leaves Wyoming as the 2nd least visited state.
Sure, we have Yellowstone, the Tetons, and Devils Tower. Fishing hiking and camping are big here. Winter sports are huge in Wyoming, as you might imagine.
Is it because some people think that Wyoming doesn't exist? (MAYBE?)
Those who do visit The Cowboy State are more interested in outdoorsy things, which makes sense.
The state does not have a single theme park or tourist attraction like California or Florida.
Folks from the most populated states drive across Wyoming and seem slightly confused by its vast open landscape.
They wonder what the heck people do out here.
If they do stop someplace they are a little confused about what they are supposed to do with themselves, besides hiking and looking at the mountains.
If you live in Wyoming you know that our state has a lot to offer. Outsiders don't understand.
However, Wyoming is in good company.
Alaska is the least visited state in the nation. Perhaps because it is so hard to get to.
Alaska has about 1 million tourists visit each year. Though the state had a record 3 million in 2023.
The top 5 least visited in order are,
5). Vermont
4). Montana
3). Delaware
2). Wyoming
1). Alaska
