It was called MAD. Mutually Assured Destruction

The theory was that each side had enough nuclear weaponry to destroy the other side. So neither side would dare do it.

Cheyenne Wyoming's F.E. Warren Air Force Base was to control those missiles.

Many launch silos were constructed in and around Wyoming.

In the video below you can watch a frightening moment reported on the TV magazine show 60 Minutes, where they reveal that the Soviet Union had a missile pointed right at Cheyenne.

The video was shot during a time when both Russia and the United States were reducing the number of missiles they pointed at each other.

Scroll to 22:31 in the video below to see what that missle looked like.

As you might imagine it had more than one warhead on it, so the obliteration of Chyenne was assured.

Each side sent observers to confirm that the other side was complying with the treaty and actually disassembling their missiles.

A lot has changed since the Cold War days.

But you better believe that Cheyenne Wyoming is still a target.

These days it would not just be a target of Russia, but perhaps China, as well.

North Korea is trying to develop missiles that can reach the United States.

They have had some success, but they still have a lot to learn before they can claim a reliable system that could actually reach the United States, much less hit what they were aiming at.

Our U.S. missile systems will soon be upgraded to ensure their accuracy if, Heaven help humanity, they are ever fired.

But the point of having those missiles is to make the worst of our enemies afraid to ever tempt us to use them.

Reading The Past - Chugwater Wyoming Newspaper

These pages of the old Chugwter Wyoming newspaper show us coverage of the region from back in the 1940s.

There was little local news, other than the war.

But what was published at the time was important to the people of the area.

It was, in most case, the only news they had from outside their little ranch or town.
