In such a rural state like Wyoming, you might wonder if there are any one-room schoolhouses, operated by the state, still out there.

Yes, there are several, and the kids have to walk to school uphill in the snow, both ways. (True, I swear).

Slack Elementary is located in Parkman, Wyoming, and is part of Tongue River Elementary School. Ryan Fuhrman is the principal. This one-room schoolhouse serves students from grades K-4. Slack school was built in the 1890s, but the original schoolhouse burned down in the 1920s. The current school was rebuilt in the 1930s. Amy Simonson is the Slack Elementary Teacher.

Bondurant Elementary is a remote, one-room public school in the Upper Hoback River Valley of southwest Wyoming. Part of Sublette County School District #1, it serves just 3 to 10 students spanning Kindergarten through 3rd or 4th grade. Despite its size, the district earns high "Exceeds Expectations" ratings. Karin Unruh is the teacher.

Antelope Creek School is a unique public one-room schoolhouse located on a generational family ranch in Garrett, Wyoming. Established in 2024 following a years-long legal and legislative campaign, it currently provides public education to the Anderson family ranch children. Joyce Hammer and Lisa Geary are the teachers.

There are roughly 4,000 to 6,000 homeschooled students in Wyoming, making up about 3.5% to 6% of the state's K-12 population. But for this article, we are not looking at them. Rather, our focus is on the public schools.

Operating these one-room schoolhouses is often more convenient during the winter months when transporting a student a long distance, in the snow, may not be possible.
