Wyoming Requires Driver Review For Big Vehicles, Teton Pass
Driving Teton Pass in Wyoming can be tricky for any vehicle. Large ones have an especially hard time. So hard, in fact, that the Wyoming Department of Transportation will have a new rule and training program for bigger rigs, including RVs.
This is not a road test but more like an online review.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation announced the WY22 SAFE PASS program, requiring a mountain safety self-certification for certain large vehicles on Teton Pass starting in October 2026.
Affected Vehicles
Drivers must complete the certification to drive:
Recreational vehicles (RVs)
Vehicles towing trailers
Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 10,000 pounds
Program Rules: Drivers complete a quick online review covering steep grades, brake fade, and load limits.
Validity: The certificate lasts for one year before you need to renew it.
Restriction: Operating these vehicles on the pass without a valid certificate will not be allowed once the program begins.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation WY22 SAFE PASS program is a self-certification program to improve driver education and awareness of the challenges of mountain pass driving.
The program will require drivers operating recreational vehicles, towing trailers, or vehicles with a gross vehicle weight and/or a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds to complete the program and self-certify their ability to navigate mountain driving.
Applicants will be able to self-certify online through a website in which they will enter some basic information and review required safety material. Once the applicant has completed the process, they will be sent a certification letter that will be active for one year. After one year, drivers can reapply for the program.
Once the program is launched, RV drivers, motorists towing trailers, and operators of vehicles over 10,000 pounds will be restricted from using Teton Pass unless they have completed the program. All existing regulations — including seasonal closures and the 60,000-pound weight limit — remain strictly in effect.
