How fast do you think the average speed is in Wyoming?
You might look at our interstates and guess it to be around 80mph or higher.
But truckers have to drive quite a bit slower, so that lowers the overall number.
Going 80mph will happen on long stretches of highway, out west. But never near towns or cities. Wyoming and other states have many long stretches.
New research from car insurance experts MoneySuperMarket reveals the average driving speeds in each US state—and highlights how Wyomingites compare to the rest of the country.
Wyoming has the fastest long-distance driving speed in the US, averaging 71.8mph.
But Wyoming does not have the fastest speed limit. There is a stretch of highway in Texas that his 85mph.
New Mexico and Idaho also rank highly, with average long-distance speeds above 70mph
Alaska has the fastest urban driving speed at 30.3mph, followed by Alabama and Nebraska
New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maryland rank the slowest for long-distance driving, with speeds under 55mph
The average long-distance driving speed for the US as a whole is 68.1mph, placing it first among the world’s fastest-driving countries
Globally, Canada and Oman follow behind the US, with average speeds of 67.0mph and 65.1mph, respectively
So, yes, Wyoming is the fastest driving state.
It might seem slower out here because of our open highways and long distances.
The United States came out #1 in the world for fastest average long-distance driving speed, followed by Canada and Oman.
Wyoming has the Fastest Long-Distance Driving Speed
At US state level, many of the less densely populated states rank among the fastest for long-distance driving due to lower congestion and it being possible to maintain higher speeds for long distances.
Wyoming takes the top spot with drivers travelling at around 71.8mph on average on long drives, followed by New Mexico in second (71.0mph average) and Idaho (70.5mph average) in third.
