The National Weather Service has couple different weather forecasting offices in Wyoming, one in Cheyenne and the other in Riverton. Between these two forecast offices, they forecast the weather for majority of the state. Riverton takes care of keeping an eye on the central/western/northwestern parts and Cheyenne takes care of the southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska. Wyoming's such a big state, we rely on the NWS out of Rapid City, SD will take care of the northeastern portion of Wyoming and NWS out of Billings, MT to be the go-to source for northcentral Wyoming.

There's a lot of area to cover, so the National Weather Service relies on trained volunteer weather spotters to help with accurate severe weather information. Whether it's rain totals, flooding information, severe thunderstorms or even tornadoes that threaten the Cowboy State, having correct and accurate information is key for the NWS to issue watches, warnings or other important weather information for the public.

If you've ever thought it would be cool to do that and be part of the network of weather spotters in Wyoming, your opportunity is coming soon.

The NWS Riverton is offering a live webinar virtual weather spotter training course at 2pm on September 13th.

Things you'll learn during this course are:

  • Identifying Hazardous warm season weather
  • safety info
  • where to find and relay weather information

If you don't already, you should be following the NWS-Riverton, NWS-Cheyenne or NWS-Rapid City, NWS-Billings social media pages. They share lots of weather information that will be helpful for you and your family.
