When you're walking across the ice can be fun, dangerous and give you anxiety. Having the appropriate gear is important. Good boots, proper attire, floatation device, ice pick, and a buddy are all good things to have with you while you're out on the ice.

You're can't be 100% certain, strictly by looking at it, that it's safe enough to cross.

  • Taking your time
  • checking for good ice
  • make sure the ice is thick enough before walking on it
  • and keeping your eyes open, are all good ways to make sure the ice is safe enough to walk on.

  • Blue to clear ice is the best
  • Snowy ice is half as strong and could have air pockets
  • Gray ice is unsafe and indicates the presence of water
  • Slushy ice is not as strong as clear ice and means the ice isn't freezing from the bottom.
