Hillsdale Felon Caught With Guns Gets 57 Months in Federal Prison

A 49-year-old Hillsdale man has been sentenced to 57 months (4.75 years) in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, the United States Attorney's Office announced Friday.

According to arrest records, on April 9, 2024, the Laramie County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant on a property in the 3800 block of County Road 223 where Michael Lee Smith lived.

The Sheriff's Office says Smith had a warrant out of Laramie County Circuit Court for eight counts of felony theft and one count of conspiracy.

Smith was also found to have felony warrants out of Platte and Converse counties and Boulder County, Colorado.

10 Guns Found

During the search, the Sheriff's Office reportedly found 10 guns and multiple high-capacity magazines.

Smith is a previously convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Smith was indicted on Sept. 18, 2024, pled guilty on Nov. 20, 2024, and Chief U.S. District Court Judge Scott W. Skavdahl imposed the sentence on Feb. 12.

Smith will be subject to three years of supervised release once he's released from prison.
