Lonely Wyoming Prairie Tree Thinks It Picked The Wrong Spot
A lone tree out in the middle of a Wyoming prairie is beginning to have its doubts about where it decided to grow.
"It's kinda lonely out here."
We named the tree Eric, just to make this conversation more personal.
When Eric first landed here, he was just a seed.
It was kinda gross, really.
A bird ate him up in the forest lands of some higher place, he can't remember where, then pooped him out over the prairie.
Other seeds came from both bird poop and by attaching themselves to animals.
At first, Eric thought that this was going to be a great place to grow up.
"I'll have lots of friends," Eric thought.
But lack of water and poor soil conditions never gave those other trees a chance to grow.
In his youth, Eric was almost completely eaten by pronghorn and other animals a few times.
Those animals also killed off a couple of other young trees that were growing a few hundred yards from where Eric set down roots.
But for some reason, Eric survived.
He now stands about 8 feet tall, which is good for a tree out in the Wyoming prairie.
Trees like him in warmer and wetter climates are much taller by now.
"I haven't had a bird's nest yet. But I still have hope.
They do sit on my branches and sing. That's nice."
Throughout it all, Eric remains optimistic.
"I have a great view, I can't deny that."
