The Sheriff of St. Mary's County, Maryland has been chosen to lead the Wyoming Highway Patrol starting in January of 2023.

WYDOT Director Luke Reiner says Timothy Cameron will bring over 40 years of experience in policing to the patrol when he takes over as Colonel of the patrol. Cameron is wrapping up his fourth and final term as sheriff

St. Mary's County has a population of a little over 113,000 people and is located on the Chesapeake Bay a little over 100 miles south of Baltimore.

According to the WYDOT news release, Cameron has both an undergraduate degree and a post-graduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The release goes on to say that he "is a graduate of the National Sheriff's Institute, the FBI's Law Enforcement Executive Development course, the Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commissions Leadership Challenge, the Executive Leaders Program at Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Homeland Defense and Security in California, and the Police Executive Research Forum's Senior Management in Policing Course at Boston University."

Reiner is quoted as saying of Cameron that his commitment to training and education are attributes that will help him succeed in his service to Wyoming," said Luke Reiner, director of WYDOT. "He has the demonstrated skillset, experience, and character to lead the best highway patrol organization in the nation."

Cameron will replace Kebin Haller, who retired in June, as the permanent head of the patrol. Shannon Ratliff temporarily came out of retirement to serve as administrator of the patrol following Haller's retirement.

The release says Governor Mark Gordon as well as the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, the Transportation Commission,  the Wyoming Department of Transportation senior leadership, the Wyoming Highway Patrol Association, and prior and currently serving Wyoming Troopers all had input on hiring Cameron.
