Walgreens announced on Thursday, June 27 that it will close a percentage of its 8,600 locations across the country.

Fortunately for Wyoming, all locations in the state remain unaffected.

Walgreens has locations in Casper, Cheyenne, Gillette, Laramie, Riverton, and Sheridan.

The company’s CEO Tim Wentworth said that the chain is facing profitability challenges and declining margins.

The exact number of store closures is unknown.

A growing list of stores to be closed can be found at this link.

So far not one Wyoming location is on that list. (Knock on wood).

Only underperforming stores will be affected.

Walgreens has closed 625 stores since February 2024.

The company has also reduced prices on thousands of products in the hopes of bringing more shoppers in.

Retail theft in some of the nation's more populated states and cities has also led to the decline of the company.

The company expects earnings per share to be between $2.80 and $2.95, down from the initial forecast of $3.20 to $3.35.

It's not just Walgreens that's in trouble.

Rite Aid and CVS have closed hundreds of locations for the same reasons.

Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy in October.

Back in 2021, CVS said that it planned to close 900 stores over three years; more than 600 already have shuttered.

For customers, it's not just about the convenience of what these stores have to offer customers in all the products they carry.

Closing these stores also closes their pharmacies.

This means there are fewer locations for folks to get much-needed medications.

Local, independent pharmacists have been struggling as well.
