Big Badass Machines Brought To Wyoming’s Elk Fire
HEAVY EQUIPMENT BROUGHT IN TO REMOVE FUEL IN FRONT OF THE FIRE.
The following was posted by the National Forest Service on their Elk Fire Facebook Page.
The #elkfire has utilized heavy equipment, which is essential in wildland fire responses. This includes common tools like bulldozers, often referred to as "dozers," as well as specialized equipment like masticators, skidders, and feller bunchers.
Let's clear the trees and burn the grass and shrubs so this fire has nothing left to keep it alive.
Major bad-boy machines include:
Masticator
Similar to a wood chipper, this monster is mounted on an excavator-type tractor, which moves through the forest and can quickly grind or chip trees and brush.
Feller Buncher
The feller buncher is a machine that can rapidly gather and cut trees. "Feller" is a traditional name for someone who cuts down trees.
Skidder
This machine is used to increase productivity on site by quickly and efficiently pulling large quantities of felled timber out of the forest.
These machines can rapidly create or expand firelines and clear substantial ammounts of fuel.
They are capable of accomplishing much more in a shorter time than crews working by hand.
The forest service is not screwing around here.
They have had enough of this fire.
A bit of relief was offered as rain and snow fell on the fire.
It's not enough to put the fire out but it stopped the fire's progress, in the short term, and is giving these teams the chance they have been hoping for.
