Punxsutawney Phil is just one of many rodents around America that, it is claimed, can tell us if we will have 6 more weeks of winter just by seeing his shadow. Pardon me if I doubt that.

Here in Wyoming folks gather outside the old airport tower at the Cheyenne Regional Airport to see if regional weatherman Don Day of Day Weather will see his shadow.

Don gets to work at around 3 am each morning. That means he is inside, working when the sun comes up. At some point, he steps out front, a cup of coffee in hand, and takes a break from forecasting.

On this morning, 02/02/21, the people of Wyoming gasped, and then groaned in despair when Don shivered in the cold air and turned around and went right back inside.

Don Day saw his shadow. Wyoming will have 6 more weeks of winter.

A few years ago the date fell on a weekend. Don was not pleased that so many people had gathered around his house. It was a Saturday. He was in his bathrobe. He was not amused.

Rather than just watching to see if Don sees his shadow and goes back inside I asked him what he thought was coming in the next 6 weeks.

6 more weeks? This is Wyoming. We will have 6 more weeks no matter what. What Don did tell us is that winter is about to finally kick in for Wyoming. But we are in a Pacific La Nina effect, so while we will have cold and snow it will be far milder than in previous years. Still, expect a lot of cold in the coming weeks.
